Mama Bird & Baby

I walked by two baby birds, one of them was clumsy and he couldn’t grab his food as easily as the other bird. I found the clumsiness of the baby bird funny. As I kept walking, I saw the clumsy bird’s mom. I jokingly told her about her baby’s clumsiness and laughed. She got angry and let out a hissing sound showing her sharp teeth, which I’ve never seen a bird show before. I thought that she didn’t understand my joke so I repeated it, but she hissed even harder. I then realized that my joke was not funny at all! Mama Bird didn’t like someone making fun of her baby. She also looked visibly distressed and sad. I don’t understand Bird language, and so it was hard for me to know what was going on in her mind.

I walked closer to her and noticed that Mama looked very sick and jaded, as if she was about to die. My brother gave her water and she immediately gulped it down. I knew from looking at her how fast she was deteriorating. I then realized how worried Mama must’ve felt worried about her baby. Maybe she hadn’t seen Baby in a while because she couldn’t fly as far as she used to. I walked back to Baby Bird, wrapped him up in a blanket and put him on a couch to keep him safe. Then I went back to check up on Mama. I asked her if I should bring her baby to see her, but the language barrier between us made it difficult for me to understand what she wanted. Maybe she didn’t want Baby to see her dying. It would be too painful to watch. At the same time, Mama might feel a relief to see her baby and to know that Baby will be okay! And Baby might benefit from seeing his mama. I had a feeling that the two needed to be together. So I took Mama close to where her baby is wrapped up. I told her that Baby is around. The bird started singing to call out for her child “Babyyy” with a very beautiful and echoey voice. Baby started singing back “Mamaa”. They kept singing trying to find each other. Then Baby flew out of his blanket and next to Mama. He sang softly and hugged his mom. The two had so much love for each other. Suddenly, Mama Bird did not seem sick at all! Her eyes were shining and she appeared completely healthy at that instant! Mama and Baby flew together with so much joy and love in them. I felt very emotional watching what happened, and I felt happy that I reunited Mama with Baby. I followed my gut feeling despite the language barrier between me and Mama Bird. I did the right thing.
